![]() Feed companies have developed special dry diets for flatfish, which the fish are weaned onto at an early stage. Turbot are long-lived, surviving to around 25 years old, and can grow up to 25kg. Unusually for a fish, they don’t have scales.įlatfish are well suited to land-based farming and can be grown in a variety of tank types. These fish are native to the Northeast Atlantic, Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.Īdult turbot feed mainly on other demersal fish, crustaceans and bivalves. Turbot are benthic (bottom dwelling) flatfish with small eyes and a large mouth, which live on sandy and muddy seabeds in shallow waters, down to a depth of around 100m. Flatfish species are either right-eyed or left-eyed, depending on which way the eye moves. Interestingly, they start life as tiny round fish, but as they grow, their bodies start to flatten out, one eye migrates across the head, and the mouth twists to the side. The term flatfish refers to fish that have two eyes on one side of their face. There are more than 700 species of flatfish, and the ASC Flatfish Standard covers some of the most important commercially produced ones, which are Halibut in the genus Hippoglossus, Flounder in the genus Paralichthys, and Turbot in the genus Scopthalmus. They are also a great fish to eat at home, with smaller fish cooked whole, and larger ones prepared as fillets. Flatfish, especially the larger species, can attract a high price, and their firm, meaty texture make them a favourite on restaurant menus. ![]()
